During the week of April 21-25, 2014, I am asking Macalester community members to take a few minutes to review the attached important severe weather information sheets. Discuss this information and procedures with colleagues and students in your classes or offices during the week of April 21-25.

Also, during this week the State of Minnesota is conducting a campaign to broaden the awareness of the general public of the dangers associated with tornadoes and other severe storms. To facilitate this exercise the State will be conducting two statewide tornado drills on Thursday, April 24, 2014.

The first drill will occur at 1:45 p.m., April 24. Sirens will sound to test the warning system. Note: There is no such thing as an “all clear” siren.

A second tornado drill with sirens will occur at 6:55 p.m. This drill will focus on families and second shift employees. This is a good time to talk with your family members about how to respond to severe weather conditions and to actually take shelter at home in your designated shelter space.

For more Family Disaster Plan information check the FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Agency) Web site at: www.ready.gov/make-a-plan and review the information.

There are various smart phone applications that may be of help during a weather emergency check with your data provider for more information.

Our goal is that with improved planning and increased awareness of the effects of severe weather, we will all be better prepared to respond to an emergency.
