Honors and Awards

Macalester is a prestigious college located in a city—we’re one of only a handful of small, liberal arts colleges that can make that claim. Mac students are curious and motivated, seeking to understand and contribute to the communities they live in. In recognition, our students receive honors and awards for their scholarship year after year.

A top Fulbright producer

Just last year, eight students received Fulbright fellowships that allowed them to work and travel in countries all over the world. Our talented students find the rigorous application process made easier with help from professors and staff, making us a consistent top producer. With thousands of applicants every year (and only a 20 percent acceptance rate), we’re proud to be among this group of scholars.

Davis Projects for Peace

This program is a competition on just 90 campuses at places like Harvard, Columbia, Duke, and, of course, Macalester. Our most recent winners completed a program on sex education in Sicily and developed education access for refugee students in Khartoum. It’s a chance for our scholars to take an idea and turn it into a fully functioning project.

Truman Scholarship

Macalester students (three in the last four years) have received this selective award, receiving grants of $30,000 to pursue a graduate degree toward a career in public service leadership. Only about 8 percent of students who apply receive this award.

Thomas J. Watson Fellowship

A full year of study in any country (and a stipend to support it) is offered to successful scholars. Students with help from mentors at Macalester create their own personal project to test their aspirations and abilities on an international scale. Recent Macalester students have been selected for their proposals focused on imperialism in modern media and water stewardship.

Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarships

The U.S. Department of State recognized Macalester for having produced the most Gilman recipients over the past 20 years in the Small Institution 20-year Overall Top Producer category. Today, 108 Macalester students have received Gilman awards since 2001. These scholarships support study abroad experiences for students with high financial need.
