Update regarding the Pandemic:

Students who were scheduled to participate in the Spring 2021 Study Abroad Program that was canceled because of the pandemic can participate instead in our Spring 2022 Study Abroad Program. In case there are new obstacles to our Study Abroad program due to pandemic-related travel limitations, students majoring, or intending to major, in German should consult with the faculty in the department of German Studies regarding fulfilling their major requirements.

The Macalester German Study Abroad Program is a unique six-month program based in Berlin and Vienna that provides students with the opportunity to gain high proficiency in German and to immerse themselves academically, culturally, and socially in both Germany and Austria.

Program Features

  • Two months of intensive language training at the Humboldt-Universität German Language Academy
  • Four months of study in Vienna, including two program-specific courses and up to two courses at the University of Vienna
  • On-site direction by a Macalester faculty member in Vienna
  • Weekly theater or opera performances
  • Excursions to other European cities, as well as a series of day trips
  • Full room and board
