Musicianship Placement Exams
Students interested in majoring or minoring in music are required to take MUSI 113 Musicianship or MUSI 214 Advanced Musicianship. Our placement exams will help you determine which musicianship course to register for:
MUSI 101 Basic Musicianship
MUSI 113 Musicianship
MUSI 214 Advanced Musicianship
MUSI 101 is a prerequisite requirement for MUSI 113. Students cannot register for MUSI 113 until they have taken MUSI 101 or placed out of MUSI 101 by taking the placement exam.
Anyone with a macalester.edu username and password can access the placement exams via Moodle. Once you have logged in, you will have five days to start the exam.
Please access the placement exams here. The site requires a password, which is “theory.”
Most students with some musical experience will take Musicianship Placement Exam A, which places you in either MUSI 101 Basic Musicianship or MUSI 113 Musicianship. Students who have taken music theory and ear training before, who wish to enroll in MUSI 214 Advanced Musicianship, should take Musicianship Placement Exam B.

We’ve designed the exam to be auto-graded and after you complete it, it should tell you in general feedback what the best placement is for you. Detailed feedback on your performance will be available after a short delay of a few minutes.

Staff paper and pencil (for Placement Exam B only)
