First-Generation to College
What is First-Generation to College?
You are considered a first-generation college student (or FGC) if neither parent/guardian has a four-year college degree. You are still considered first-generation even if a sibling has attended college.
Navigating college for first-generation college students can be filled with questions and challenges of how to get connected on campus and find support and resources. The Lealtad-Suzuki Center for Social Justice aims to encourage students to explore their identity as first-generation students, and to encourage them to give voice to their experiences while at Macalester.
Additionally, many first-generation programs also help support students who may identify as low-income.
Our programs seek to uplift and support our first-gen and low-income (or FGLI) students through informational workshops, social gatherings, study groups, and celebrations. These efforts increase connection and help build skills to help students grow and thrive during their time at Macalester and beyond.
Program Mission & Description
The Lealtad-Suzuki Center generally offers monthly programs that especially center the identities and experiences of first-generation-to-college students. Events often include panels or activities on topics like Imposter Syndrome, financial literacy, and navigating Macalester and include opportunities for group dialogue and reflection.
