Tenure Track Assistant Professor of Mathematics
The Department of Mathematics, Statistics, and Computer Science (MSCS) at Macalester College invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor in Mathematics to begin Fall 2024. Candidates must have or be completing a Ph.D. in Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, or a closely related field. They must have a strong commitment to and vision for excellence in teaching, mentorship, and research in an undergraduate liberal arts environment. We are especially interested in candidates who can contribute to our applied mathematics curriculum, in introductory as well as advanced courses.
Macalester’s joint department of Mathematics, Statistics, and Computer Science offers an attractive platform for mathematical scientists. Our unified structure facilitates cross-disciplinary cooperation. Macalester faculty teach five semester course sections per year (typically three distinct courses), supervise senior capstone presentations and honors theses, advise students in their curricular and career choices, maintain an active scholarly agenda, and engage in pedagogical, curricular, and extracurricular departmental activities. During their first year of the appointment, new faculty teach four courses and attend a weekly new faculty development seminar. - Research statement: a statement of your contributions to the scholarly field and future research goals. Highlight professional engagement in the field through journal publications, conference presentations, and/or software development as well as ongoing publishable projects. Describe your current and immediate future research projects. The strongest candidates will have enthusiasm and a feasible plan for incorporating undergraduate students in their future research.
- A cover letter (no more than two or three pages) that provides an executive summary of your file. Include 2-3 sentences summarizing each of these topics:
- Your specific interest in joining the MSCS Department at Macalester College,
- Your training and experience in mathematics,
- Your experience in, commitment to, and vision for teaching and mentoring undergraduate students,
- Your experience in, commitment to, and vision for DEI,
- A list of courses from our curriculum that you would like to teach,
- Your contributions to the scholarly field and future research goals, including a description of how your research will thrive at an undergraduate institution.
