THDA 51, Beginning Ballet

THDA 51, Beginning Ballet: This is a beginning ballet class designed for students who have never had ballet before. The goal is to demonstrate fundamental understanding and execution of basic ballet technique and to develop a foundation in movement that will carry over and support any other style of dance or physical practice. It will include barre and center work, across-the-floor combinations, and stretching and strengthening practices. Correct alignment, coordination, and body mechanics will be emphasized. May be repeated for credit. S/N grading only.

Frequency: Every semester.

Course Objectives

  1. Students will demonstrate an understanding of basic ballet technique.
  2. Students will acquire the foundational steps that make up ballet vocabulary.
  3. Students will develop artistic skills as a beginning ballet dancer.
  4. Students will gain an historical understanding and appreciation of ballet.
  5. Students will gain an understanding of basic anatomy pertaining to ballet.

Methodology

Dance is a continuum of learning. Through conditioning exercises, practice at the barre and the acquisition of dance steps in the center, you will be expected to develop and refine the understanding of the following skills:

  1. Origination and use of turn-out
  2. Alignment
  3. Positions and use of the feet
  4. Carriage and positions of the arms
  5. Musicality
  6. Professionalism

Evaluation

This is a two-credit course that does not carry a grade. Credit is given upon strict fulfillment of the attendance requirement.
