THDA 235, Fundamentals of Scenography

THDA 235, Fundamentals of Scenography: Scenography is the creation of imagined spaces for performances. In this course we will study the fundamentals of scenography holistically, including scenic, lighting, costume, sound, and projection design. Students will develop the ability to analyze and critique elements of performance design, articulate design ideas through written and verbal means, and complete a design project from textual analysis to tangible object. Department provides course materials.

Frequency: Every fall.

Course Objectives

  1. To develop an appreciation for visual and sound elements in theater and their relationship to other aspects of performance
  2. To learn fundamental concepts, skills, and processes used in scenography
  3. To develop skills to communicate design ideas in a variety of forms, with an emphasis on the visual and the verbal
  4. To develop performance design projects through and iterative process based upon feedback from peers and the professor.

Methodology

Most class sessions will involve a combination of lecture, discussion, and opportunities to practice skills such as sketching, model building, drafting or making collages or storyboards. Class sessions will also provide opportunities for students to give and receive peer feedback on projects.

Between class sessions, students will be expected to do complete assigned readings, conduct research, and work on their projects.

Over the course of the semester, several projects will allow students to explore various areas of scenography, including sound, light, costume, projection, and set design.
