Use this name rather than its former name, the Annual Fund. The Macalester Fund is part of the college’s broader Engagement program, which includes Alumni Engagement and Special Events.

Capitalize when referring to the formal program. Lowercase “fund” in subsequence references.

maiden name

See birth name.

major and minor

Lowercase both “major” and “minor” and the subject area unless it includes a proper noun: Sarah Smith is a geology major. John Smith is an English major.

MD

See doctor.

middle initials

Avoid except in formal usage, or where someone with a common name (say, John Smith) might be confused with someone else.

Be alert to cases in which a middle initial stands in for a woman’s birth name, and substitute the full name for the initial.

Spell out in text. Exceptions: As part of a list or for reasons of space constraints.
