THDA 53, Intermediate Ballet: This ballet class is for students with some experience in ballet. This class will continue to build on ballet barre and center work and increase skill and vocabulary. Flexibility, strength, placement, alignment, fluidity and connection of movement will be emphasized. May be repeated for credit.

Frequency: Every semester.

Prerequisite(s): THDA 51 or permission of instructor.

Course Objectives

  1. Students will demonstrate an enhanced and expanded understanding of ballet technique.
  2. Students will acquire and enhance their understanding of ballet vocabulary.
  3. Students will develop artistic skills as an intermediate ballet dancer.
  4. Students will gain an historical understanding and appreciation of ballet.
  5. Students will gain an understanding of basic anatomy pertaining to ballet.

Methodology

Dance is a continuum of learning. Each level of technique will address an increasing complexity of dance skills, as well as advancing performance expectations. Through conditioning exercises, practice at the barre and the acquisition of dance steps in the center, you will be expected to develop and refine the understanding of the following skills:

  1. Origination and use of turn-out
  2. Alignment
  3. Positions and use of the feet
  4. Carriage and positions of the arms
  5. Musicality

Evaluation

This is a two-credit course that does not carry a grade. Credit is given upon strict fulfillment of the attendance requirement.
